New Zealand Job Websites

... information to help you find work

A selection of New Zealand job websites and immigration information to help you with your decision to move to this country.

If you are not a New Zealand citizen or hold residency, you must first apply for a work permit.

The NZ government is doing a lot of work to help you do this online and the entry point for this process is the Department of Immigration.

The New Zealand Immigration service operates a points system that, unfortunately, seems to change with the weather.

Perserverence and patience will be but two of the characteristics required as you work your way through the process.

A good resource to help you through this is the Nu Kiwi Reports written by people who have done it all before for people doing it for the first time...

That said, this is something you need to know about.

Skills Shortages

To help you apply there are two important lists you need to know about

Print off both of these and study them carefully before going to the following New Zealand job websites. They will help you make a more effective application.

Government Websites

The NZ government is a major employer throughout the country and has some of the largest infrastructure needs. The Ministry of Social Development, for example is the largest IT shop in the country.

State sector salaries are comparable to private sector, especially in the management positions. Needless to say, there are many who feel that this is unnecessary government expenditure but if you're looking for a reasonable salary, the government is not a bad place to start.

Most government departments and state-owned enterprises advertise on their own websites but you can find all state sector jobs on this website, New Zealand Government Jobs Online. You'll find them listed elsewhere, with the recruitment agencies and on other New Zealand job websites but there is a statutory requirement to list them all here so it's a good place to get an overview of what's available.

If you want to live and work in New Zealand permanently, there are a number of options available regardless of whether or not you wish to work for the state sector.

Skilled Migrant Category
The Skilled Migrant Category is for people who have the skills, qualifications and experience we need, and who want to live and work permanently in New Zealand.

New Zealand is looking for people with the skills, qualifications and experience to help our country grow and innovate in the future. We also want skilled migrants to settle here feeling welcome and able to make a positive long-term contribution.

If you've got the skills we need and want to make New Zealand your long-term destination, our Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) offers you the opportunity to move to New Zealand to work and live permanently.

Please note: There are important changes to the Skilled Migrant Category taking effect on 30 July 2007.

Work to Residence
The Work to Residence category allows you to get a temporary work visa and/or permit as a step towards gaining permanent residence. Applicants may be qualified in occupations that are in demand in New Zealand, see the lists of Skills Shortages above, or may have exceptional talent in sports or the arts.

Residence from Work
The Residence from Work category is for people who are already in New Zealand on a Work to Residence permit, and want to apply for residence.

General New Zealand Job Websites

The largest of the general New Zealand job websites is Seek. They cover all categories and have direct links to the recruiters.

Then there are the newspapers, the NZ Herald for Auckland, the Dominion Post for Wellington and The Press for Christchurch.

Fairfax media, the owners of the Dominion Post have recently bought TradeMe, NZ's online auction site so you may see references to TradeMe jobs as well. It's the same as jobstuff, the online version of the Dominion Post. Their website is called stuff.co.nz because it deals with stuff. You know, like news and stuff...

General Recruitment Agencies

These are large and you can get lost in them but because of their size many larger organisations put their recruiting needs through them. As with everything, it depends on the recruitment consultant you end up with.
